Evaluating School Counselors
A new school counselor evaluation system is currently in effect for school counselors in all West Virginia schools. This link provides information and resources for the school cousnelor evaluation system.
The new system was piloted in nine schools during the 2011-12 school year. Like the new principal and teacher evaluation system, the school counselor evaluation system was expanded to two additional sites per county which made up the 2012-13 Demonstration Sites. Only these schools were permitted to utilize the new evaluation system during the 2012-13 school year..
WVDE conducted two "Train-the-Trainer" workshops during the Summer of 2012. The county and RESA administrators who attended these trainings are reponsible for training counselors and principals in demonstration sites in each county to implement the new system. Very few changes were made by the system as the system received positive feedback from both counselors and administrators. The WVDE provided training at the RESA and county level, upon request during the summer and ealy fall of 2013 and at the Spring 2014 WVDE School Counselor Conferences to assist with effective implementation of the new system. Additional technical support and guidance is available upone request. Please contact Dr. Barbara Brady firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or training requests.
The school counselor evaluation system is aligned closely with the principal and teacher evaluation system. A primary difference is that each role has its own set of performance standards to guide the self-reflection and evaluation process. Additionally, there are differences in the way counselors and other educators establish goals. This Power Point provides guidance for counselors on inputting goals into the online system.
