The third annual Tri-State Farm & Food Conference was held on October 12-13 at the Pullman Plaza in Huntington, WV. OCN coordinators, Andy Pense and Bekki Leigh, who have been instrumental in Farm to School efforts in West Virginia schools, presented sessions at this conference which brought together farmers, consumers, school cafeteria personnel and businesses within a 50 mile radius of Huntington. The goal of the conference was to revolutionize the area’s food system through agricultural education.

Friday’s pre-conference workshops featured Farm to School as one of four main topics offered during the day-long sessions. A Farm to School panel discussed the “Nuts and Bolts of Farm to School” and WVU Extension agents provided information on ways they might assist schools in Farm to School, including how to organize a Farm to School event.

On Friday evening, conference participants had the opportunity to attend a farmers market and a food fair in which area chefs offered their best dishes created with local products. Saturday’s agenda included 30 hour-long sessions on a variety of topics specifically targeting collaborative efforts and opportunities for growth and expansion of the agricultural community.
