MINUTES WEST VIRGINIA BOARD OF EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/TRAINING SESSION Board Conference Room Capitol Building 6, Room 353 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East Charleston, West Virginia November 6, 2008
I. Call to Order
President Delores W. Cook called the professional development/training session of the West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) to order at 10:30 a.m. on November 6, 2008, in the Board Conference Room, Capitol Building 6, Room 353, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, West Virginia.
The following members were present: President Cook, Vice President Priscilla M. Haden, Robert D. Dunlevy (via telephone), Barbara N. Fish, Burma Hatfield, Lowell E. Johnson, and Gayle C. Manchin, and ex officios Steven L. Paine, State Superintendent of Schools, and Brian E. Noland, Chancellor, West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. Members absent were Secretary Jenny N. Phillips and ex officio and James L. Skidmore, Chancellor, West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education.
II. Approval of Agenda
Upon motion by Ms. Hatfield, seconded by Dr. Johnson, Board unanimously approved the agenda.
III. Follow-up to October 22-23, 2008 Professional Development/Training
Superintendent Paine presented additional information and answered questions regarding innovation zones.
IV. Break
President Cook called for a break lunch at 12:05 p.m.
V. Call to Order
President Cook called the meeting back to order at 12:27 p.m.
VI. Follow-up to October 22-23, 2008 Professional Development/Training (Continued)
Superintendent Paine presented additional information and answered questions regarding the middle college concept (Chancellor Noland departed the meeting), educator advancement programs, and summer enrichment programs for students.
VII. Future Meetings
The Board’s Communications Committee will meet November 10, 2008 in Charleston, West Virginia. The next regular meeting of the Board will be held November 12, 2008 in Charleston, West Virginia.
VIII. Adjournment
Upon motion by Dr. Johnson, seconded by Ms. Haden and unanimously carried, the Board adjourned at 1:50 p.m.
