April 21, 2005

Call to Order

President Barbara N. Fish (via telephone) called the emergency meeting of the West Virginia Board of Education to order at 12:01 p.m. on April 21, 2005, in the Board Conference Room, Capitol Building 6, Room 353, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, West Virginia.

The following members were present: President Fish, Vice President Lowell E. Johnson, Sandra M. Chapman (via telephone), Delores W. Cook, Sheila M. Hamilton (via telephone), Paul J. Morris (via telephone), Ronald B. Spencer (via telephone), and ex officio David Stewart, State Superintendent of Schools. Members absent were: Secretary Priscilla M. Haden, Burma Hatfield and ex officios J. Michael Mullen, Chancellor, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, and James L. Skidmore, Chancellor, the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education.

II.

Approval of Agenda

Upon motion by Mrs. Cook, seconded by Mrs. Hamilton, the Board unanimously approved the agenda.

III.

Search Process for State Superintendent of Schools

President Fish, upon the consensus of the Board, named Ms. Chapman as Chair of the Search Process. Ms. Chapman lead a discussion regarding the search process. Ms. Heather Deskins, Staff Attorney, Office of Legal Services, Superintendent's Office, and Ms. Melanie Purkey, Executive Director, Office of Student Services and Health Promotion, Division of Instructional and Student Services, were named to assist the Board with the search process.

IV.

Future Meetings

The next meeting of the Board will be April 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in the Board Conference Room, Capitol Building 6, Room 353, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, West Virginia. The next regular meeting of the Board will be held May 11-12, 2005 in Randolph County, West Virginia.

Adjournment

President Fish adjourned the meeting at 1:04 p.m.
